  • Directed by Boyd Kirkland, Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero is about as good as an average episode of Batman: The Animated Series, which puts it above most animated fare but below the two Mr. Freeze episodes. The story spins off directly from the series in that Mr. Freeze (Michael Ansara) seeks an organ donor to save the life of his frozen wife Nora. A crooked medical researcher (George Dzundza) will help if the price is right, and even involuntary donors aren't out of the question. Bad luck for Barbara Gordon (Mary Kay Bergman) that she is a compatible donor, which brings events to the attention of Batman (Kevin Conroy) and Robin (Loren Lester).
  • While the film's voice acting meets the usual high standard, the animation uncomfortably combines great cel work with mediocre CGI, making the whole thing look more like a video game cutscene than a movie. The plot is just barely enough to fill out an hour, and the entire thing only really works as a kid's story, which is something I wouldn't say about the best episodes of the animated series. It also seems a bit silly that Mr. Freeze has made friends with an Inuit kid and some polar bears, but honestly this version of Mr. Freeze is still so much better than his contemporaneous live-action counterpart that I can't really complain. There's even something close to a happy ending (assuming you don't continue on watching the DC Animated Universe).
