  • DIRECTOR: Mario Bava
  • ACTORS: Barbara Steele, John Richardson, Andrea Checchi, Ivo Garrani, Arturo Dominici, Enrico Olivieri, Tino Bianchi, Antonio Pierfederici
  • PLOT: A witch (Steele) and her lover (Dominici) return from the dead to terrorize a Moldavian manor.
  • EVALUATION: Mario Bava's debut film proves to be a surprisingly compelling and well-directed Gothic horror flick.
  • WRITING: The dubbing doesn't do the dialogue any favors, but it would be largely unremarkable in any case.
  • FILMING: Outstanding direction and great scenery are the primary reasons you would watch this film.
  • BEST PART: That creepy carriage ride that leads to a walking tour of mysterious hallways that terminates in a very recognizable crypt.
  • TRIVIA: The aging/de-aging effects were accomplished by illuminating Steele with different colors of light that would bring out or hide makeup.
  • STINGER: The witch takes off her shirt.
