  • DIRECTOR: Harold Clurman
  • ACTORS: Susan Hayward, Paul Lukas, Bill Williams, Joseph Calleia, Osa Massen, Lola Lane, Jerome Cowan, Marvin Miller
  • PLOT: A naive young sailor (Williams) teams up with a world-weary dancer (Hayward) and a clever cab driver (Lukas) to solve a murder that the sailor probably did not commit.
  • EVALUATION: A wonderfully quirky crime drama helped by the adorable goofiness of its protagonist, who measures time in haircuts, and its cab driver, who possesses a certain Lugosian charm.
  • WRITING: The plot is nothing to write home about, but the dialogue from Clifford Odets for the three leads is outstanding.
  • FILMING: Does a lot to convince the audience that they have stayed up all night.
  • BEST PART: Confronting a potential murderer during a police retirement party was pretty fun.
  • TRIVIA: This was Harold Clurman's only film. (He was primarily a stage director.)
  • STINGER: Babe Dooley drops his bottle on the ground.
