- DIRECTOR:
Paul Bartel
- ACTORS:
David Carradine, Simone Griffeth, Sylvester Stallone, Mary Woronov, Roberta Collins, Martin Kove, Louisa Moritz, Don Steele, Joyce Jameson
- PLOT:
Homicidal racecar drivers (Gangsters! Nazis!!) careen across the countryside trying to mow down pedestrians in a distinctly 70s update on gladiatorial games.
- EVALUATION:
Endlessly entertaining, but one of those films that revels so much in the violence and exploitation it also satirizes that one wonders if the audience is the real target of the critique.
- WRITING:
Occasionally witty, as when the government blames the French for interfering with the race.
- FILMING:
The action and racing scenes are decent, but you probably shouldn't look too closely at some of the allegedly futuristic backgrounds.
- BEST PART:
David Carradine flaunting a cape, naturally.
- TRIVIA:
The woman rubbing Stallone's back is Wendy Dio, wife of Ronnie James Dio.
- STINGER:
Frankenstein: "Watch out for the crêpe suzettes."
