  • Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Admittedly, I suspected that it would be a mistake to view this film only a week after seeing its excellent ancestor, The Wrath of Khan. What I didn't realize, however, is that it would always be a mistake to view this film. Simply put, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is a complete misfire. It's certainly the worst classic Star Trek film and probably belongs somewhere above "Space Hippies" and below "Spock's Brain" in the overall pantheon of Trek stories. It's tough to imagine a more damning criticism than that.
  • So why is this film so awful? Surprisingly, the main problem is not the odd plot, which follows the Vulcan rebel Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) and his fanatic scheme to meet God at the center of the Galaxy. No, the real problem with this film is that nobody involved seems to care at all. It's as though the primary impetus for making The Final Frontier was that the actors and set were available and, frankly, weren't much good for anything else. Of course, the lion's share of blame should fall squarely on the shoulders of the writers and director, who somehow managed to make even a fight between Captain Kirk and God seem pointless. Which individuals were responsible for this travesty, you ask? Well, there's only one person who acted in, wrote, and directed The Final Frontier, and his name is William Shatner. Draw what conclusions you will.
  • As usual, I neglected to list the cast of characters. All the old favorites are back.
  • David Warner has a minor role in this film.
