  • DIRECTOR: RenĂ© Laloux
  • ACTORS: John Shea, Jennifer Grey, Christopher Plummer, Glenn Close, Earl Hammond, Sheila McCarthy, Paul Shaffer, Earle Hyman, Penn & Teller
  • PLOT: Umm...there's a big brain and metal men...I think I'm just going to punt on this one.
  • EVALUATION: The films of RenĂ© Laloux may appeal to fans of Yes album cover artist Roger Dean or that guy in your dorm who has a black light, but I've always found their visual beauty to be exceeded by the blandness of their dialog, themes, and plots.
  • WRITING: Arranged primarily around an annoying repeated riddle.
  • FILMING: The art and animation are admittedly striking, but why no shirts?
  • BEST PART: This is a harsh thing to say about an animated film, but honestly the soundtrack.
  • TRIVIA: In the French version, the mutants are known as "The Transformed" which didn't get translated directly in the U.S. because of the Transformers.
  • STINGER: Bowling for metal men.
