  • Everything about Nobuhiko Obayashi's House screams cult classic. It's about Japanese schoolgirls (Kimiko Ikegami, Miki Jinbo, Ai Matsubara, Kumiko Oba, Mieko Sato, Masayo Miyako, Eriko Tanaka) with names like Gorgeous and Fantasy being slowly hunted down and killed by one girl's aunt (Yōko Minamida) and/or an evil cat. One of the girls is eaten by a piano, another is smothered by mattresses, and still another is transformed into a watermelon and eaten. At least, I think that's what happened. The film is completely unashamed of its matte painting backdrops and hand-drawn visual effects and never stops being fun for its 88-minute runtime. I'd gladly watch this one again instead of most serious horror films.
