  • DIRECTOR: Lloyd Bacon
  • ACTORS: Edward G. Robinson, Jane Wyman, Broderick Crawford, Jack Carson, Anthony Quinn, Edward Brophy, Harry Davenport, Barbara Jo Allen
  • PLOT: A trio of newly released convicts purchases a luggage store as part of a plan to tunnel into the neighboring bank, but they accidentally go legit along the way.
  • EVALUATION: A relatively rare example of crime comedy that works well enough, largely because Robinson and Crawford are such compelling performers.
  • WRITING: Rapid-fire, oscillating between Stooges-like "c'mon you mugs!" and the occasional eruption of actual wit.
  • FILMING: The unexpected basement oil geyser is impressive, although the film doesn't have any great visual ambitions.
  • BEST PART: Gloria: "Well I wish you'd drop in and look over my lingerie sometime." Pressure: "Well, you drop in sometime and look over my trunks."
  • TRIVIA: Jackie Gleason has a bit part.
  • STINGER: Robinson singing in a Santa Claus outfit
