  • My interpretation of Les Enfants Terribles is described well by Elizabeth's explanation to Agathe: "It's just how we are. You must get used to us.".
  • I absolutely fail to relate to the main characters in this film, but I nonetheless feel that I knew them well by the film's end. That Elisabeth (Nicole Stephane) and Paul (Edouard Dermithe), the brother and sister Enfants Terribles themselves, have a unique relationship is an understatement. They strive to be complete adversaries in all respects, and this tends to get in the way of their interactions with their friends Agathe (Renee Cosima) and Gerard (Jacques Bernard). Furthermore, they are completely indolent and practically amoral. It is mentioned that their childhood involved some happy shared imaginings, although the film mostly shows them being horrible to one another. Sexual attraction is implied, although really it's just a small part of their whole strange relationship. Much of the film's dialogue uses words like "absurd, useless, and awkward," all of which, in my opinion, apply also to Paul and Elisabeth.
  • The choice of Jean-Pierre Melville to direct Les Enfants Terribles seems odd now, but only because he would later become famous for his outstanding crime dramas. This film is anything but a genre picture, but still Melville's direction and the cinematography are very impressive at times. In fact, they are the only reason that I would ever watch this film again since I find the two main characters so repellent. Although the final scenes attempt to evoke Macbeth, my own thoughts strayed to Romeo and Juliet. The difference being that theirs was a tragic suicide while this one seemed like a good choice.
  • The same actress plays Dargelos and Agathe. No, I don't know why.
  • It was nearly impossible for me not to think constantly of Arrested Development's mock film Les Cousines Dangereaux and George Michael saying "I like the way they think."
