  • DIRECTOR: Dan Gilroy
  • ACTORS: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed, Bill Paxton
  • PLOT: The most amoral internet self-educated creep in the world (Gyllenhaal) devises a way for his fortunes to escalate rapidly after connecting with the most amoral reporter in the world (Russo).
  • EVALUATION: An absolutely brilliant directorial debut from Gilroy summons a career-best performance from Gyllenhaal as a modern Travis Bickle in this compelling tale of making your own news.
  • WRITING: The script is superb, with every line from Gyllenhaal sounding like it came from a bad YouTube video on how to ace a job interview. ("I'm a hard worker. I set high goals and I've been told that I'm persistent.")
  • FILMING: Excellent dim-light urban cinematography
  • BEST PART: Taking bets on how long Riz Ahmed's character is going to be around
  • TRIVIA: Gilroy is married to Russo.
  • STINGER: Bill Paxton saying "Fuck you, twerp!"
