- DIRECTOR:
George Romero
- ACTORS:
Duane Jones, Judith O'Dea, Karl Hardman, Marilyn Eastman, Keith Wayne, Judith Ridley, Russell Streiner, Kyra Schon
- PLOT:
The dead come to life to feast on the living, specifically targeting a diverse group of humans hiding out in an abandoned house.
- EVALUATION:
Probably the best and certainly the most influential zombie movie, it still manages to pack a punch decades later by the astonishing brutality with which it dispenses of its protagonists.
- WRITING:
I can't decide whether it is stupid or realistic that so much of the film is devoted to debates about hiding in the cellar, but it seems that a lot of the dialogue was improvised anyway.
- FILMING:
Filmed in an uncomfortably immersive style with authentic-seeming news footage and shadows that hide some presumably terrible details.
- BEST PART:
That car explosion.
- TRIVIA:
The news reporter ("Chilly Billy" Cardille) was a horror movie host in real life.
- STINGER:
The annoying guy gets punched.
