  • Date: 09/09/25
  • Location: home
  • DIRECTOR: Norman Jewison
  • ACTORS: James Caan, John Houseman, Maud Adams, John Beck, Moses Gunn
  • PLOT: The reigning champion of a violent futuristic sport is pushed to retire because he demonstrates too much individualism.
  • EVALUATION: The poster child for what I like to call "Pretty Good Dystopias" (most of the world's problems appear to have been solved at the cost of tolerating a violent sport and forgetting the 13th century), this film is not nearly as good at philosophy as it is at rollerball itself.
  • WRITING: Based on a short story by William Harrison and not terribly clever or compelling.
  • FILMING: Occasionally great futuristic scenery and a very memorable font.
  • BEST PART: Honestly, the rollerball, which is presented in such remarkable detail and at such length that the audience might be forgiven for forgetting that it is a made-up combination of football and roller skating.
  • TRIVIA: Apparently the rollerball arena was the largest set ever constructed on location at the time.
  • STINGER: Moonpie gets punched in the back of his neck.
