A submarine captain (Gable) obsessively pursues the Japanese destroyer that wrecked his previous ship, while his executive officer (Lancaster) tries to prevent him from sacrificing his crew.
- EVALUATION:
Great for about 3/4 of its runtime before inexplicably delivering the lesson that it is perfectly acceptable to put your crew in danger while obsessing over a single ship.
- WRITING:
Based on a novel by Edward L. Beach Jr. and influenced heavily by Moby Dick, one imagines.
- FILMING:
The action sequences are absolutely wonderful, particularly when some very realistic-looking depth charges begin to explode.
- BEST PART:
Clark Gable yelling "Dive! Dive!!"
- TRIVIA:
Apparently Gable resisted having Lancaster take over command, which is hilariously in character.
- STINGER:
That kid getting squished by a torpedo.
