- DIRECTOR:
William Wyler
- ACTORS:
Myrna Loy, Fredric March, Dana Andrews, Teresa Wright, Virginia Mayo, Cathy O'Donnell, Hoagy Carmichael, Harold Russell
- PLOT:
Three servicemen return from the war to find that society has changed nearly as much as they have.
- EVALUATION:
A brutally honest and affecting portrait of postwar life supported by a truly outstanding cast.
- WRITING:
Based on a novella by MacKinlay Kantor and mostly naturalistic with the occasional dramatic flair.
- FILMING:
Very impressive, particularly in the early aerial shots, the capturing of uncomfortably crowded locations, and the deep focus shots in the wedding scene.
- BEST PART:
In a film overflowing with great scenes, I still have to give Harold Russell the most credit when he bares his arms and his soul to Cathy O'Donnell.
- TRIVIA:
Harold Russell is the only actor to win two awards for the same role despite also not being trained as an actor.
- STINGER:
Teresa Wright announces her intention to break up a marriage.
