  • DIRECTOR: Daniel Haller
  • ACTORS: Dean Stockwell, Sandra Dee, Ed Begley, Lloyd Bochner, Sam Jaffe, Joanne Moore Jordan, Donna Baccala, Talia Shire
  • PLOT: A creepy member (Stockwell) of a historically suspect family attempts to summon an evil god to impregnate a woman (Dee) at a place called the Devil's Hop Yard, which goes about as well as you might expect.
  • EVALUATION: A surprisingly faithful adaptation that has the misfortune to have been made in 1970, when sexual innuendo, psychedelics, and corniness were in full bloom.
  • WRITING: At its best when it sticks close to H.P. Lovecraft's original story.
  • FILMING: Gaudy at times, but the psychedelic colors late in the film are at least memorable.
  • BEST PART: Wilbur's invisible twin goes on a rampage.
  • TRIVIA: This was originally announced as a Mario Bava film, which would have been interesting.
  • STINGER: Stockwell asking Dee if she wants some spiked tea for about the 18th time.
