  • DIRECTOR: Roger Corman
  • ACTORS: Vincent Price, John Kerr, Barbara Steele, Luana Anders, Antony Carbone, Patrick Westwood, Lynette Bernay, Mary Menzies
  • PLOT: A mourning brother (Kerr) visits the castle where his sister (Menzies) died, triggering a series of disturbing occurrences that revolve around torture and an increasingly disturbed widower (Price).
  • EVALUATION: Helped dramatically by the presence of Vincent Price, this occasionally interesting film never dares to ask the question: why did they keep a working torture chamber?
  • WRITING: Nothing exceptional, although credit is shared between Richard Matheson and Edgar Allan Poe.
  • FILMING: Populated with memorably monochrome flashbacks and some pretty good scenery.
  • BEST PART: Either the flashbacks or Vincent Price's descent into madness.
  • TRIVIA: Apparently a televised version of this film sports a prologue featuring Sid Haig, and now I'm really disappointed that I didn't see that.
  • STINGER: The annoying brother runs into the room and gets knocked out by Vincent Price.
