- DIRECTOR:
Joseph Losey
- ACTORS:
Van Heflin, Evelyn Keyes, John Maxwell
- PLOT:
A remarkably unethical cop (Heflin) obsesses over a married woman (Keyes), seduces her, murders her husband, marries her, and forces her to have their baby in an abandoned ghost town.
- EVALUATION:
Heflin's character is so manipulative and awful and Keyes's character so gullible that they never manage to be the villains that you find yourself rooting for.
- WRITING:
By an uncredited Dalton Trumbo, but otherwise unremarkable.
- FILMING:
The ghost town is very memorable and Losey's direction is fine.
- BEST PART:
The wrong record plays at the wrong time, apparently inducing labor.
- TRIVIA:
John Huston was an uncredited producer who pushed this movie as a vehicle for Keyes, his estranged wife.
- STINGER:
