  • DIRECTOR: Joseph Losey
  • ACTORS: Van Heflin, Evelyn Keyes, John Maxwell
  • PLOT: A remarkably unethical cop (Heflin) obsesses over a married woman (Keyes), seduces her, murders her husband, marries her, and forces her to have their baby in an abandoned ghost town.
  • EVALUATION: Heflin's character is so manipulative and awful and Keyes's character so gullible that they never manage to be the villains that you find yourself rooting for.
  • WRITING: By an uncredited Dalton Trumbo, but otherwise unremarkable.
  • FILMING: The ghost town is very memorable and Losey's direction is fine.
  • BEST PART: The wrong record plays at the wrong time, apparently inducing labor.
  • TRIVIA: John Huston was an uncredited producer who pushed this movie as a vehicle for Keyes, his estranged wife.
  • STINGER: Heflin sitting in his sad apartment reading a muscle magazine
