  • Directed by Jay Levey in name, but obviously masterminded by Weird Al Yankovic in practice, UHF is a movie that works best when it doesn't even pretend to be a movie. Its many absurdist commercials, surreal fantasies, and offbeat TV shows are exactly the right medium for Weird Al, and this film contains some of his (and Michael Richards') funniest stuff. I'm talking "Spatula City," Conan the Librarian, and Gandhi II, just to name a few of its many great bits. That said, the film also unwisely flirts with having an actual plot, involving some combination of an evil corporate television owner (Kevin McCarthy), a love interest (Victoria Jackson), and a debt-ridden uncle (Stanley Brock). We don't like Weird Al for his drama, movie, we like him for his poodle jokes. Anyway, more than half of the movie is funny enough that, in its own words, "we'll forget about how miserable we are, and how much life sucks, and how we're all gonna grow old and die someday."
  • Also featuring David Bowe, Fran Drescher, Anthony Geary, Billy Barty, Trinidad Silva, Gedde Watanabe, Emo Philips, and Dr. Demento!
