- Alfred Hitchcock's Under Capricorn is a bunch of familiar ingredients mixed up in a completely unsatisfying way. The story follows Charles Adare (Michael Wilding) as he attempts to rehabilitate Lady Henrietta (Ingrid Bergman) at the behest of her ex-convict husband, Sam Flusky (Joseph Cotten). Complications arise as Charles falls in love with Henrietta while the maid, Milly (Margaret Leighton), desperately tries to win the affections of Sam. This latter point leads to one of the few interesting parts of the film, as it is revealed that Milly has been drugging and otherwise manipulating Lady Henrietta for her own ends. The rest of the film is a rather uneven love triangle between three fairly dull characters. Although Cotten and Bergman help any movie they're in and Hitchcock's long takes are impressive, these elements aren't quite enough to keep the film interesting.
- Hitchcock shows up in the town square, but I didn't spot him.
