  • DIRECTOR: John Boorman
  • ACTORS: Sean Connery, Charlotte Rampling, Sara Kestelman, John Alderton, Sally Anne Newton, Niall Buggy
  • PLOT: A trained murderer kills the being posing as his god and proceeds to disrupt the seemingly idyllic world of the immortal society that has long since decayed into decadance.
  • EVALUATION: With its absurd plot, meme-inducing loincloth, and community theatre dialogue, Zardoz serves as a prime example of a film that never bothered to ask itself: "Hey, is this stupid?"
  • WRITING: A sample: "The Penis is evil! The Penis shoots Seeds, and makes new Life to poison the Earth with a plague of men, as once it was. But the Gun shoots Death and purifies the Earth of the filth of Brutals. Go forth, and kill! Zardoz has spoken."
  • FILMING: The cinematography by Geoffrey Unsworth, who did 2001: A Space Odyssey, is actually pretty good.
  • BEST PART: The creepy head statue floating around in the fog (but before it starts vomiting out guns).
  • TRIVIA: Apparently writer-director John Boorman admits that this project was largely drug-fueled.
  • STINGER: Sean Connery shoots the audience.
